Authorities in Afghanistan announced that they had arrested three senior South Asia Islamic State members among them the regional leaders. Among the three arrested was ISIS’ head of South Asia, Ziaul Haq also known as Abu Omar Khorasani, was arrested in Kabul.
Afghan intelligence agency National Directorate of Security (NDS) said that the Islamic State for Khorasan Province (ISKP) public relations chief Suhaib and intelligence chief Abu Ali have also been detained in the same operation.
South Asia Islamic State is mainly focused on a small presence in Afghanistan, largely in the north, though it has waged high profile attacks further south in the capital. The continued high-profile arrest of ISIS leadership in Afghanistan is in line with the comprehensive and targeted operations to hunt down senior leaders of regional terrorist groups and destroy the joint hubs of these terrorist networks.
In November last year, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani declared that Daesh/ISIS had been “obliterated” in his country, with hundreds of its fighters surrendering to security forces.
