Confirmed reports from Somalia indicate that the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab publicly executed an alleged informant in Middle Shabelle region of Somalia.
Reports further indicate that Shabaab executed Yasin Mohamed Omar on suspicion that he was spying on behalf of U.S. military forces. His execution comes amid increased U.S. airstrikes against the militant’s positions in southern region of Somalia.
Al-Shabaab still maintains control of a number of localities in Middle Shabelle region. The execution took place in Aden Yabaal district of Middle Shebelle, a region that serves as a den for the militants. The region is within the Southwest state, which falls under the jurisdiction of both UPDF and Somali National Army (SNA) under the AMISOM mandate.
The Al-Qaeda linked group usually executes alleged spies in public without being given a chance to defend themselves. The Shabaab courts do not give victims chances to defend themselves and use forced confessions as a methodology to accomplish convictions in their quest to safeguard their interests, which include sustained attacks against military and government officials besides instilling fear to the locals to refrain from collaborating with security assets.
Al-Shabaab has in the past executed a number of its own members on suspicion of spying for foreign troops in Somalia.
