At least two Somalis suffered injuries after mortar shells were fired targeting a heavily fortified facility in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. The mortar shells believed were fired by the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab happened on April 19.
Nine mortar shells were fired targeting the facility that houses both African union troops (Halane Base Camp) and several diplomatic mission offices on Sunday evening raising concerns about safety within the green zone area (Heavily guarded zone).
The mortar shells left two civilians critically injured and local sources report that they are receiving treatment within the Base Camp, which has a Level II hospital that offers treatment to injured troops within Somalia.
Besides targeting Halane Base Camp, the militants also targeted Aden Adde International Airport with mortars though it remains unclear who the militants were targeting in the airport, which is also close neighbor of the camp military base.
It’s the third time within this year that the militants are targeting the Halane base camp. In an effort to justify their attack, the Islamist militants alleged that the attack was aimed at liberating the land ‘forcefully occupied by foreigners’.
