Military reports from Somalia indicate that Somali forces supported by U.S. forces conducted an airstrike on Wednesday 29th January 2020 and destroyed an Al-Shabaab base in southern region of Somalia.
The airstrike was conducted around the Al-Shabaab controlled town of Jilib and initial assessment indicate that no civilian was wounded or killed in this air raid.
According to Somali government spokesman Ismael Mukhtar Omar, one Al-Shabaab occupied compound was destroyed in the strike. He also noted that Somali supported by allied forces have carried out a number of successful military operations in and around Jilib, the militant group perceived headquarters.
Al-Shabaab a few years ago had dominated most of southern region of Somalia but following intensified military forces they have been forced to retreat.
The spokesman also emphasized that the latest strikes further highlights the determination of the joint security forces to bring to justice the Al-Shabaab militants who have exploited Somali people in their campaign of violence and fear.
Despite these increased air raids by Somali forces and U.S. partners, Al-Shabaab still hold control of some parts of rural southern and central Somalia and continues to wage high-profile attacks in Mogadishu.
