The Islamic State (ISIS) has confirmed the death of the group’s leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in a statement on Thursday and named his replacement as Abu Ibrahim al Hashimi al Quraishi. Additionally, the statement also affirmed that the groups’ spokesman, Abu Hassan al Muhajir was also killed as earlier reported.
The statement said that al Quraishi was confirmed as the new leaders after the Daesh’s legislative and consultative body convened after the 48-year-old Iraqi-born terrorist chief’s death. While little is known of the replacement it is believed that he is the leading judge of IS [Daesh] and he heads the Sharia committee.
His appointment as the second caliph of ISIS was announced on October 31, 2019, less than a week after the death of al-Baghdadi. The real identity of the new ISIS chief is unknown to the world. His name al-Qurashi is believed to be a nom de guerre which means he has used this assumed name to engage in war and kept his real identity hidden.
Al Baghdadi was killed in Idlib in northwestern Syria. US special forces carried out the Syrian operation in which Al Baghdadi killed himself and three of his children by detonating a suicide vest when he was cornered in a tunnel, according to US officials.
