Somali Special Forces, Danab have seized the town of Awdhegle in Lower Shabelle region, dislodging the Al-Qaeda affiliated, Shabaab militants.
In an intelligence-led, well-plan offensive, Danab forces raided and liberated the strategic Awdhegle town from the militants. Awdheegle is a town in the Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia with an estimated population of about 19,000 inhabitants. It is located about 70 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu on the Shabelle River.
Awdhegle is on the main supply road for African Union troops, AMISOM in southern Somalia. Al-Shabab held the town for several years and used as a base to launch attacks in the conflict-riddled Lower Shabelle region.
Military intelligence assets in the region have confirmed that the operation was a success and that the military are in full control of the district but still combing through the town to make sure there are no terror cells, elements hiding in the liberated area.
The commander of the Somali inventory unit Gen. Odowaa Yussuf Raage emphasized such military operations will continue as part of the wider plan in getting rid of the Shabaab threat which has crippled and destabilized the horn of Africa nation for many years.
