Interior Ministry of Libya’s UN-backed government has announced arresting a number of leaders of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb on the outskirts of the capital Tripoli. The leaders were arrested following a raid spearheaded by Libyan attorney general’s office.
Weapons, hand grenades, ammunition, and documents were seized with the arrested terrorists. While the names are yet to be released, the ministry maintained that the leaders were of various nationalities and belonging to al Qaeda.
Al Qaeda has been seeking to exploit the deteriorating security in Libya to enter Tripoli and establish themselves. Libya has been the center stage of various terror organizations’ activities including and not limited to ISIS and al Qaeda.
Since early April, the government has been engaged in a deadly war against the eastern-based army over control of the capital.
