Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo calls on the countries in the region to enhance their joint efforts to degrade the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab.
President Farmajo made the remarks when he hosted diplomats in Mogadishu for dinner. Somalia President underscored that his government is committed to enhancing joint counterterrorism efforts to stabilize Somalia.
Somalia has a weak forces that is also under equip and the horn of Africa nation has for more than a decade suffered the brunt of Al-Shabaab militia battling to topple the Federal Government of Somalia.
It’s noteworthy that for the past few months there has been calm in the capital Mogadishu and many other regions of Somalia but resurgence has been witnessed in the past recent weeks where Al-Shabaab has mounted attacks in Kismayo and in the capital.
The country’s troops backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have increased operations against Al-Shabaab in South and central Somalia in an effort to disrupt the militant’s networks and plans.
President Farmajo emphasized the need to cooperate on fighting Al-Shabaab as a joint front saying the group is a threat to the regional security.
Though Al-Shabaab has been forces in large swathe of southern Somalia it once controlled and other major towns in south and central including the capital city, the militant group still maintains active pockets in remote areas and still tries to launch deadly attacks in major towns.
Regional troops under AU mandate supporting Federal Government Forces in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS include; Kenyan troops (KDF), Ugandan troops (UPDF), Ethiopian troops, Burundian troops and Djibouti troops.
