The US State Department has approved the potential sale of a support package to Morocco for the sustainment of the country’s current F-16 fleet.
Morocco had previously requested a $250.4 million support package from the US that would see a significant upgrade of the country’s F-16 fleet. Under the proposed sale, the US will supply F-16 support equipment, spares, and repair parts, personnel training, training equipment, publications, and technical documentation will also be provided.
The request for F-16 sustainment came after Morocco in March requested an additional batch of F-16s from the United States, and upgrades to its existing fleet. On 25 March the US State Department said it had made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Morocco of 25 F-16C/D Block 72 aircraft and related equipment for an estimated cost of $3.787 billion.
Morocco has been an ally to the US especially in the pursuit of regional security and anti-terrorist campaign in North Africa. North Africa has been the stage for various terror organizations including ISIS and Al Qaeda as well as some of their volatile affiliates.
