Kenya vowed to take stern action against citizenry lending support to the Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Shabaab along the volatile border with Somalia.
According to NEP regional commissioner Mohamed Birik, individuals or groups providing material or logistical support to Al-Shabaab terrorists will face the full force of the law.
Birik revealed that security patrol teams who recently were on a mission in the expansive Boni forest stumbled upon 20 jerrycans stuffed with food that was buried underground.
According to Birik, the jerricans that were found underground were neatly packed with rice, sugar, beans and cooking oil, and it is believed they were meant for Al-Shabaab.
This latest incident confirmed fears that there are locals still aiding terrorists along the borderline with Somalia. Birik issued a stern warning to the collaborators that they will be severely punished once they are identified.
He urged members of the public to be on the high alert and report any suspicious characters in their midst.
The regional commissioner also cautioned members of the public to be vigilant citing that heavily armed terrorists can walk a long distance on foot during the rainy season and take advantage of the poor infrastructure that undermines patrols along the Kenya-Somalia border.
