Around 3,000 Islamic State members have surrendered from the group’s last holdout in Syria, Kurdish-led forces said Tuesday.
Air raids and shelling resumed in the once held Syrian village of Baghouz. The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has been trying to crush holdout IS fighters for weeks but the mass outpouring of men, women and children from the riverside hamlet had slowed anti-IS operations.
Backed by the US-led coalition, the SDF renewed its assault Sunday after warning remaining IS fighters their time was up.
Air strikes and shelling have since bombarded Baghouz for three nights in a row, killing scores of IS fighters and prompting hundreds of extremist insurgents and their relatives to surrender.
Thousands surrendered themselves over Tuesday, after a flood of fire struck the IS encampment the previous night.
The SDF and the US-led coalition resumed shelling and air strikes on the last IS bastion on Tuesday evening, after being halted for some few days to allow IS fighters to surrender.
