In support of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. continues to conduct airstrikes targeting the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab terrorists.
The U.S. conducted airstrikes on January 19, 2019, near the militants’ held town of Jilib in Middle Juba region of Somalia killing fifty-two (52) militants and injuring several others.
The U.S. conducted the airstrikes in response to an attack by a large group of Al-Shabaab militants against Somali National Army Forces.
According to U.S. Africa Command, the airstrikes were conducted in collective self-defense of Somali partners after they were engaged by Al-Shabaab combatants. There were no civilians were injured or killed in these airstrikes, the statement added.
The recent U.S. airstrike in central and southern are aimed at destabilizing and preventing Al-Shabaab from taking advantage of safe havens from which they can build capacity and attack the people of Somalia and neighboring countries.
