Libyan National Army, a powerful paramilitary based in the eastern city of Benghazi says its troops are launching an operation “to cleanse” the country’s south of Islamic militants and criminals.
The paramilitary’s spokesman Ahmed al-Mesmari announced the operation that the series of operations will eliminate gangs, Islamic State terrorists and criminals in Libya’s south. Furthermore, the operations will target to deal with the growing threat of illegal immigrants from the Sub-Saharan region that have been causing a major international crisis as they seek to travel to Europe.
Libya slid into chaos after the 2011 uprising that overthrew and killed long-ruling dictator Moammar Gadhafi. The country is currently governed by rival authorities in Tripoli and the east, each backed by an array of militias.
Intelligence has indicated that such operations would help the deplorable security situation in the country and especially in the wake of reports that term Libya as a popular and somewhat preferred haven destination for ISIS jihadist from the Middle East.
