The U.S. Army awarded Dynetics, Lockheed Martin a $10 million contract for the next phase of the High Energy Laser -Tactical Vehicle Demonstrator (HEL-TVD) program, a 100- kW-Class Laser Weapon System cited for testing in 2022.
Laser weapons are effective and preferably suited to address high volume and low-cost threats because of their low-priced cost per shot and deep magazine.
Team Dynetics have already completed system review require and are ready to begin the preliminary design review of the product. Dynetics is banking on its vast experience of systems engineering, manufacturing, test and vehicle alterations for combination on the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV).
Lockheed Martin on its part will provide the laser subsystem, as well as other key subsystems citing it has over 40 years of experience developing laser weapon systems.
With increased threat to deployed U.S. troops, Laser weapons will offer a deep magazine at a very low cost per shot making them suitable to complement existing kinetic energy weapons to address intense hostile raids.
