Police in Iraq have arrested five people for allegedly having links to the Islamic State in western Mosul. The arrests come as Iraq is seeking to clear the remaining pockets held by ISIS in the northern parts of the country.
Nineveh Police Chief, Brigadier General Hamad al-Jabouri confirmed the arrests further saying that the police were responding to a tipoff by the local residents of the likely operation of an ISIS sleeper cell. The police were able to recover digital material and weapons from their haven.
Thousands of people have been arrested by Iraqi forces for suspected Daesh links since the terrorist group was cleared from its largest stronghold in Mosul last year.
Last December, officials in Baghdad declared that the Daesh’s military presence in Iraq had been all but dismantled after a three-year war. However, from time to time, Iraqi officials announce operations against Daesh-affiliated “sleeper cells” in certain parts of the country.
