The Italian police on Thursday 29/3/2018 arrested five Tunisians in major anti-terror swoop conducted in central and southern Italy.
This is the latest swoop in a series of similar anti-terror raids conducted earlier this month. The swoop comes at a time Italy is stepping up the number of foreign citizens it expels.
On Wednesday 28/3/2018 the anti-terror police arrested an Italian citizen of Moroccan descent. Authorities said he was an Islamic State sympathizer planning a truck attack.
In a vast ant-terror raid carried out by special investigation forces based in Rome and the nearby town of Latina, five Tunisians were arrested and detained.
According to Italy judicial sources, the five are suspected of being part of a network connected to Anis Amri, the Tunisian who killed 12 people when he drove a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in December 2016.
Amri was shot dead by Italian police near Milan four days after the Berlin attack.
