AMISOM chief, Francisco Madeira reiterated of the AU peacekeeping force commitment in battling Al-Shabaab and stabilizing Somalia.
The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somali called on the international community should rally behind efforts to renew the war against the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab militants and subsequently hasten Somalia’s reconstruction.
“Liberating Somalia from the crippling influence of Al-Shabaab and violence is the first step to stabilize the country,” Madeira said during an interview in Nairobi.
The AMISOM chief called on the support of the Somali government armed forces in the preparedness of the AU peacekeeping force exit to take over the country’s security.
He lauded the troop’s contribution in eliminating Al-Shabaab saying that the military assault against the militant group was significant.
He warned that the Al-Qaeda-linked terror network remained a huge threat to peace and stability in the greater Horn of Africa region.
The AU envoy noted that targeted airstrikes and enhanced intelligence gathering has dealt a huge blow to Al-Shabaab as evidenced by deaths and defections of senior commanders.
Madeira promised that continue to fight alongside Somalia troops to eradicate terrorism in the country.
