The Somali Federal Government and leaders from the various states in the Horn of Africa nation agreed on a major joint offensive against the al Shabaab upon the conclusion of an 8-day consultative conference in Mogadishu.
In a communique released after the summit, the leaders highlighted the importance of training and equipping Somali forces in a way to annihilate militants who launched two separate attacks in Mogadishu during the concluded conference. “The leaders of federal and state governments pointed out the need to come up with strategic plans to rout the terrorists in Somalia and carrying out pre-emptive measures,” read the communique.
The leaders further agreed that the al Shabaab threat has divided the nation for far too long and that the states needed to create a conducive environment that would allow cooperation in the fight against the terrorists. The states and the government have been at odds with the federal government since June fueled by the Qatar-Gulf crisis, and as such, the promise to work in unity is a welcome move in the heavily anticipate anti-al Shabaab campaign.
