Government has hinted intention to lift 6.30p.m-6.30a.m curfew in Mandera County during the holy month of Ramadhan.
The curfew was imposed October last year by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery following spate of attacks in Mandera town.
The curfew has affected people living in Mandera Town, Omar Jillo, Arabia, Fino, Lafey Kotulo, Elwak and the environs and it extends to about 20kilometres from the Kenya-Somalia border.
Local leaders led by Mr Maalim Adan Sheikh called on the government to lift the curfew restricting night movements to give them adequate time for prayer especially during the coming holy month of Ramadhan.
Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto speaking in Mandera town emphasized on government commitment to improving security in the NEP region and in the country.
The Deputy President noted of government plan to employ 150 Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) to secure areas on the Kenya-Somalia border in Mandera County, as it continues with its efforts in promoting safety.
He also touched on modernizing the equipment used by security officers saying the government will increase the number of armoured vehicles and police.
