Senior military commanders from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) met in Somali’s capital Mogadishu to review, re-assess and strategize their operations.
AMISOM’s commander from all the five sectors across Somalia attended the meeting which began on Monday.
The meeting focused on the effectiveness of the ground troops and possibility of increasing troop size to enable cover all the sectors effectively and with overstretching the soldiers.
On his opening remarks Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia, Francisco Caetano Madeira thanked the troops for their selfless service, the dedication towards securing the ongoing electoral process amid efforts by the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab to disrupt the process.
“I am happy to hear that in all sectors, AMISOM is viewed with respect, because AMISOM is effectively securing the electoral process. It shows we are living up to our commitment, despite all the challenges,” Madeira told the military commanders.
Madeira emphasized the urgent need to build the capacity of the Somali National Army in preparing them to take over their country’s security once AMISOM begins exiting Somalia in 2018.
He noted that AMISOM has trained over 20,000 SNA soldiers.
