The battle to oust Islamic State Takfiris and free Iraqi’s second largest city of Mosul gathered momentum on Monday as Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi army jointly raided their positions from east and south of Mosul.
By Monday afternoon, Peshmerga forces had advance 7 kilometers (4miles) east of Mosul while Iraqi army had started penetrating the Al-Kuwer area to the southeast.
According to Iraqi military source, the latest developments came within the context of a broad Iraqi army operation which was launched early Monday to wipeout the beleaguered Mosul of the Islamic State Takfiri terrorist group.
Peshmerga forces deployed along the Al-Kazir axis east of Mosul, began their advance at dawn, capturing at least eight villages on the city’s outskirts, according to army Maj. Mustafa Sarhank.
“The advance is continuing; we are now near the intersection of the Al-Hamdaniya district some 7 km east of Mosul,” Maj. Mustafa Sarhank told Anadolu News Agency.
The U.S.-led anti-ISIL air assaults had continued to strike Daesh positions along the Al-Khazir line.
Separately, 482 square miles of area 'cleared of' Daesh in N Syria in the ongoing Operation Euphrates Shield, Turkish deputy premier said Monday.
