Turkish Special Forces conducted an operation capturing 11 soldiers alleged to have been involved in a plot to ‘kidnap’ President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during last month’s failed coup attempt
According to a report by the state-run Anadolu News Agency, the 11 soldiers are captured in the Ula district of Mugla province in a Turkish Special Forces operation supported by helicopters and drones.
The state media Anadolu Agency reports that the caught soldiers were part of a group that launched an attack on a hotel where President Erdogan was holidaying on the night of July 15 in the southwestern resort of Marmaris.
President Erdogan, having been tipped off that he was in danger was evacuated from the hotel by the time the rogue soldiers arrived.
The state media further reports that a total of 37 soldiers were involved in the operation to seize Erdogan and a total of 25 of them so far have been apprehended.
Turkish government has blamed Fethullah Gulen, a US-based Muslim cleric, for the coup attempt. Gulen has denied the charges.
