February 23, 2016: The Syrian government has accepted the terms of a ceasefire deal that has been brokered by the US and Russia. Syria has however maintained that the ceasefire will only be successful if the fight against the terrorists continues.
According to Syrian authorities, they would coordinate with Russia to decide which groups and areas would be included in the ‘cessation of hostilities’ plan to reduce the collateral damage.
Syria said that it was important to seal the borders and halt foreign support for armed groups, as well as to prevent “these organizations from strengthening their capabilities or changing their positions, in order to avoid wrecking this agreement.”
On Monday, Russia and the US adopted ‘Terms for Cessation of Hostilities in Syria’ a ceasefire that is expected to take effect on Saturday February 26, 2016 at midnight Damascus local time. The ceasefire will include all parties of the Syria conflict that have indicated their commitment but will exclude ISIS, Nusra Front and any other terrorist organization designated by the UN Security Council (sic).
