BUJUMBURA: 8th February 2016, four people were killed in a grenade attack on Saturday when three grenades hit the Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura. Twelve people were also injured in the three simultaneous blasts.
According to a witness, a minor also perished in the Saturday’s blast.
Burundi has witnessed civil unrest for nine months sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term.
The violence escalation has left more than 400 people dead in a country that emerged from an ethnically charged civil war in 2005.
According to a local administrator identified as Vincent Ngendahayo, confirmed about the grenade attack that left four killed and twelve others injured.
On Friday, five people were killed including a security officer in separate attacks blamed on armed group Republican Forces of Burundi (FOREBU) which opposed Nkurunziza’s leadership.
Burundi violence escalation has prompted African Union to appoint five heads of states to convince the government of Burundi to accept peacekeeping force which its leader (Nkurunziza) is opposing.
President Nkurunziza is steadfastly opposed to the AU force deployment, saying it would amount to an invasion.
