Summary:
President Hassan Sheikh of Somalia announced a pledge from the japan government that was agreed upon during the recently concluded African Union Summit in Ethiopia.
The Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Japan Kayawi Katsuyuki led by Shizo Abbe made a pledge in the tune of $37 million that will be directed towards boosting the security of Somalia.
The money comes at a very suitable time when Somalia is battling the seemingly ‘rejuvenated’ al Shabaab militants, a fragile government system and forthcoming elections that are expected to shape the countries political scene and stability.
Japan has in the past years supported Somali police by donations of vehicles, uniforms modern equipment among others; the same will continue according to Mr. Shizo Abbe.
Since 2007, Japan has been very resourceful ally to Somalia with the donations to Somalia going to the tune of $340 Million of which $60 million has been channeled towards security.
