Nigeria’s authorities have issued a fresh twist in militants’ threat after intelligence sources revealed the militants’ plot to poison water sources in northeastern Nigeria.
Summary
In a statement released on Monday 26th October 2015, the Nigerian army informed the public on Boko Haram’s intention to buy large quantity of rat poison and other poisonous items from markets in Nigeria to enable them poison water sources particularly in the North Eastern states.
Pending proper investigations, the West African country’s authorities advised citizens to stock up on water and other necessary commodities.
Boko Haram has experienced significant losses since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in May with the main promise to end Boko Haram violence.
Buhari gave his top military commanders until the end of the year to defeat the insurgents. After coming to power, he restructured the military and replaced the heads of the army, navy and air force in an attempt to refocus military efforts on defeating Boko Haram.
Over the weekend, troops of 5 Brigade Nigerian Army, destroyed all Boko Haram camps and enclaves at the border towns of Kerenowa and Chikun Gudu and their contiguous villages in Borno State.
In the weekend event, Boko Haram terrorists lacked the will to fight, abandoning their camps and leaving behind vehicles, solar panels used to power devices, food and other logistics.
The move to poison water sources happens to be final kicks of a dying horse as Nigerian military work under tight pressure to wipe out all militants.
The tactic is also indiscriminate as Boko Haram seeks to kill both Muslims and non-Muslims by poisoned water, a move that questions their ideological guidelines.
