Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, Nigeria’s top general has said that Boko Haram, which has been crippling Nigeria for dozens of months, will only need three months to be totally wiped out.
Buratai said that the terror group has been substantially degraded and could be defeated before the end of the year 2015.
Analysis and Summary
Intelligence sources have assessed the validity of the assertion that was made early September 2015 by Nigeria’s military. The possibilities of the terror group in West Africa being brought to their bended knees outweigh the group’s future relevance in Nigeria and her neighbors.
Since President Muhammadu Buhari took office of the country’s topmost leadership, Boko Haram have suffered a lot of losses under the capable offensive by Nigeria’s military with the backing of a regional force made from troops from Cameroon, Niger, Benin and Chad.
President Buhari gave his military a 3-month ultimatum to ensure that the military are wiped out from Nigeria’s borders and outside. Since then, there has been increased pressure on the militant group amounting from recurrent offensives launched by the military.
The offensives in the country’s north-east region are the sourest to the militant group. Early September, the Nigeria’s aerial offensive destroyed the militant group’s power source, cutting them from supplies. The aftermath ground attacks saw to the death of several dozens of militants.
The militant group no longer has a significant hold over Borno state. The state has been most terror plagued from the onset of Boko Haram terror operations.
Early September 2015, OSINT summaries highlighted terror incidences in Nigeria’s southern region that act as pointer that the militant group could be planning to relocate their terror cells to the south after being pushed from the north-eastern region.
Luckily, the public intelligence has informed Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations that have put up intelligence measures to thwart future threats from the terror group in the south. Boko Haram seems to be cornered from all angles. Nigeria’s neighbors will also do everything possible to prevent Boko Haram spill over into their borders.
On Monday 7th September 2015, President Buhari travelled to Accra to discuss regional security with his Ghanaian counterpart, John Dramani Mahama.
Recognizing the fact that Boko Haram is a threat to Africa, there are combined efforts to destroy it. Earlier intelligence revealed that Boko Haram militants are also responsible for training Al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia, the Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen (Al Shabaab) which poses a threat to many counties in Africa.
