South Sudan’s opposition leaders on Thursday 13th August confirmed their willingness to join peace talks in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
The mediating body Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has summoned President Salva Kiir and his former deputy, Riek Machar to Addis Ababa to join the talks.
The deadline for them to sign a final peace agreement is set for 17 August, 2015.
Meanwhile, there is a growing rift within the South Sudan opposition, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in Opposition (SPLM-IO).
Gathoth Gatkuoth and Peter Gadet who were among rebel top commander were sacked last month are among those threatening to fight the peace deal between Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir.
The breakaway rebel commanders accused Riek Machar of put his interest of wanting a position for himself before the interest of the South Sudanese people.
The move is likely to slur the peace deal and worsen the civil crisis in Africa’s youngest nation. It is high time forces eager for success of the peace deal view the two as individuals behind imminent sabotage of the long waited peace agreement.
