Latest INTREP indicate that Al-Shabaab top leader is hiding in Gedo region of Somalia. Ahmed Diriye or “Abu Ubaidah” along with other top Al-Shabaab leaders are on the run from their hideouts in southern Somalia as military operations narrows down on them.
The top leadership fled from Jilib in Lower Jubba where they have been in control following successful raids by US and AMISOM in the past few weeks. The raids have left more than 100 jihadists killed.
According to SNA commander of Sector 43, Gen. Ismail Sahardiid, Al-Shabaab’s Ahmed Diriye and militias loyal to them fled to Gedo region following intensive onslaught from allied forces. The General however noted that SNA backed by their partners will continue to pursue them wherever they will go.
The same source reported of a new conflict between Ahmed Diriye, the leader of Al-Shabaab and his deputy, Fidow. The growing rift by the two senior-most figures of Al-Shabaab have been based on financial and administration order in the group.
Fidow has influential power in the terror group and he is behind recent attempt to eliminate Ahmed Diriye, who is reported to have fled from Lower Jubba to Gedo Region.
Increased airstrikes and ground offensives against Al-Shabaab hideouts has caused fear and suspicious between the group’s top officers. Many officials of Al-Shabaab have so far defected to the Federal Government of Somalia, while some others have been beheaded by the group as the result of mistrustful between them.
