Military Intelligence assets in Somalia have confirmed that an airstrike conducted by U.S. military near Buulo Fuulay village, Bay region of Somalia killed two (2) extremists of the Al-Qaeda aligned, Al-Shabaab militant group.
The precision airstrike was conducted on March 27 by an unmanned U.S. drone in the latest onslaught aimed at disrupting the militant’s network southwest of Mogadishu where the group’s presence and control is still high.
The drone strike was conducted in coordination with allied intelligence assets who assisted in tracking the killed militants before the U.S. airstrike.
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Miguel A. Castellanos, the deputy director of operations underscored that, U.S. will continue to work closely with allied partners by taking decisive action to eliminate militants in Somalia.
So far, 29 Al-Shabaab militants have been killed in drone strikes in Somalia since January 2020. Most the airstrikes are targeted in remote villages in southern and central Somalia where the group still maintains control. Notably, the militant deaths do not represent those tallied from ground combats, which are significantly higher.
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), in a statement noted that no civilians were injured or killed as a result of the airstrike.
