The U.S. State Department on Tuesday 8th September 2015 highlighted its new diplomatic ties with Somalia with the reopening of a new mission in the country.
Strategically, Kenya has been chosen to host the new embassy in Somalia whose headquarters will be located in Nairobi. The US State Department said that the mission will be located not in Somalia, but in the US Embassy in neighboring Kenya with the US representative traveling back and forth from Nairobi.
Summary
The United States has renewed its diplomatic ties with Somalia that were broken in the early 1990s when the country was declared war torn.
This is marked by the opening of a United States embassy to Somalia whose headquarters will be hosted in Nairobi.
This, according to intelligence summaries, is an indicator that the war waged against Al Shabaab militants in Somalia is headed towards success as western countries show commitment to establish ties with Somalia.
The United States officially closed its embassy in Somalia on January 13th 1991 and evacuated its entire remaining staff from Mogadishu after Somali militia and armed civilian fighters shot down a US helicopter killing dozens of people.
The announcement by the United States to reopen an embassy in Somalia on Tuesday 8th September 2015 comes only a day after the Chinese government donated USD1.2 million to support the ongoing African Union mission to Somalia. This is a drive that will go a long way in ensuring the militants are brought to their knees, as resources have been one of the factors that have crippled AMISOM troops in the past.
The strategic choice of Kenya to host the US mission in Somalia also sends home the fact that Kenya, which neighbors Somalia where the terror group Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen are based, can be trusted with capability to deal with the militant threats.

wonder why anyone would have an embassy there anyway ..
