MILITARY BRIEF
March 2, 2016, Official military reports from Somalia indicate that SNA forces killed seven Al-Shabaab fighters when the two warring sides clashed in southern Somalia.
The spokesman for the Kismayo-based Jubbaland State Ahmed Mohamud confirmed to media reporters that Somali security forces clashed with fighters from the Al Qaeda affiliated group, Al-Shabaab after the troops launched surprise raid targeting the militant’s mid-level commanders in Abdalla-Birole.
Abdalla –Birole is an Al-Shabaab held town located some 40 kilometers west of the port town of Kismayo.
Abdalla-Birole has for a long time been used by Al-Shabaab terrorists as pad for launching attacks to SNA and AMISOM troops.
The Somali-based Islamist group has not commented on the raids. However, the group continues to wage guerrilla attacks across villages and towns in Somalia.
KDF – AMISOM’s troops dislodged the militants from the strategic port town of Kismayo which had been their stronghold for years and from where they collected hefty taxes from the port and businesses to fund the outfit’s terror activities.
KDF troops captured the strategic town of Kismayo in 2012 after months of fierce fighting.
AMISOM forces have intensified their ground and air offensives in renewed efforts to retake control of remaining Al-Shabaab strongholds, towns and villages including Jilib town, one of the last key strongholds of Al Shabab.
