KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Wednesday 23rd September 2015, Somalia National Army backed by Ethiopian forces fighting Al Shabaab militants under the banner of African Union Mission in Somalia –AMISOM battled the Al Shabaab fighters killing 10 in the Bay region of Somalia.
While briefing the local media, Abdullahi Sheikh Ahmed, a senior military officer in the region, told journalists that the joint operations saw 10 militants killed in the intense battle with the militants, their operational and logistical bases were destroyed while the troops also burnt down three of their vehicles.
The military operation which began on Tuesday 22nd, September 2015 was a success as the joint forces captured the strategic district of Labatan Jirow which was under the control of the militants for several years.
According to the military official, several Al Shabaab militants were arrested and will be debriefed for more leads, however he vowed to bring them to justice for terrorist’s acts they have committed.
Government forces supported by AU peacekeeping troops have intensified their military operations across all sectors citing recently the troops have faced fierce resistance from the Harakat al Shabaab al Mujahideen movement.
SUMMARY
The Mujahideen fighters in the last few weeks have ambushed the AU troops even at their camps with the recent attack using a SVBIED exploded near the presidential palace in Mogadishu killing at least 11 people.
The Al Qaeda branch in Somalia is battling to topple the international backed Somalia government and install their Islamist Sharia Law. The militants have lost many strongholds especially in southern and central Somalia.
The militant group also adapts tactical withdrawal from some regions to seal themselves from the wrath of AMISOM troops. Though the militants still launch sporadic attacks in Somalia and to neighbouring East Africa countries, the group has suffered significant blows and its capability has severely been dented.
