MILITARY BRIEF: COMBATING AL-SHABAAB MILITANTS
Military chiefs from countries contributing troops in Somalia have met in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss strengthening their forces battling Al-Shabaab in Somalia under AMISOM umbrella.
The head of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Francisco Madeira praised Kenya and other force contributing countries for helping the fragile administration rebuild Somalia after more than two decades without a government.
Madeira has lauded the troops in Somalia for their bravery and selfishness and took time to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers in the line of duty.
“I would like to pay tribute and acknowledge the efforts of all our soldiers and police officers in the ranks of Amisom, who, in very trying circumstances, are presently holding the Pan-African banner and fighting Al-Shabaab with courage, dedication and enormous personal sacrifice. I thank them, these are living African heroes,” Madeira was quoted saying.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops joined AMISOM in February 2012, months after sending its troops to Somalia to battle out Al-Shabaab militants.

Other force contributing countries serving under AMISOM include Uganda (UPDF), Ethiopia, Burundi, Djibouti and Sierra Leone.
Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Samson Mwathethe represented Kenya in AMISOM’s military operations coordination committee.
The meeting was also graced by Commissioner for Peace and Security at the African Union Commission Smail Chergui and acting AMISOM force commander Mohammedesha Zeyinu.
A similar meeting was held in Addis Ababa on September 1, 2015.
That entails a lot, not a two or three state affair. And Africa at large esp. AU has to step up.
