EVENT SUMMARY
In the past few days there have been increasing terror incidents in Mandera close to the border with Somalia.
In the same locality of Mandera, Somali militant believed for a cell pro-ISIS ambush a military truck from Nairobi and headed to Mandera between Elwak and Lafey towns.
The attack claimed live of one KDF soldier and injuring other two who were taken to hospital for medication.
The leaders from NEP had also blamed police of individual disappearances and even claimed of mass graves but investigation into the matter found none.
Only one woman was found and intelligence reports pointed that the women identified as of Mrs Isnina Musa was an Al Shabaab cook and disappeared from Somalia when the area they were operating was captured by AMISOM and SNA forces.
According County Commissioner in Mandera, Fredrick Shisia, additional security officers have since been deployed across the county and at the border points to conduct patrols.
Tuesday 16th December 2015, Police in Mandera managed to thwart a pre-planned Al Shabaab attack that was targeted at two passenger buses destined to town.
According to Fredrick Shisia, the County Commissioner, the buses were ambushed through the stretch of Elwak and Wargadud location.
The transport buses had 12 police officers escort and responded to the militants. Fierce exchange of fire ensued, when overpowered the militants fled. None was injured in the attack Mr Shisia added.
The attack is linked to Al Shabaab insurgents who occasionally cross over to Kenya territory in NEP through the porous border, conduct surprise ambushes and fleeing back to Somalia.
Police reinforcement immediately responded, condoned off the area and security agents launched manhunt of the attackers believed to be linked with the Al Qaeda branch in Somalia.
Due to increased terror level in Northeastern part of Kenya, the government has been providing armed police escorts to public service vehicles in and out of Mandera town since last November, when the Somali based Islamist, Al-Shabaab terrorists hijacked a Nairobi-bound bus and killed 28 people.
