Kenya’s Security Services Fixing Policing Challenge

AP-Kenya

Police in Kenya have been used by journalists to provide perspective on the challenges of national security besides the gaps in policing.

The intent is often to besmirch the government and sensationalize issues, some already solved through technology and upgrades.

During training officers learn to adapt challenging situations. They must use such training to deliver on their promise to protect life and property.

“Police Officers aren’t just told about the risks they face. They are shown painfully vivid, heart-wrenching dash-cam footage of officers being beaten, or gunned down”.

“The officer’s lack of vigilance or a momentary loss of attention or hesitation is the primary cause of such incidences. Officers’ actions are grounded in their expectations, and they are taught to expect the worst.”

Living conditions and food haven’f featured as critical aspects of policing. In case of deployment to challenging environment, unless otherwise, Kenya police often have a supply chain that constantly or periodically replenishes the supplies.

In area’s like Boni in Lamu County, Mandera, and other zones mapped by government counter terrorism experts, there are challenges particularly logistics.

Driving vehicles into a zone of conflict, terrorist hideouts, and hostile civillians is risky. Police officers inserted into such zones have training that helps them assimilate. Its called deep cover. This helps them use the community in there to gather intelligence, conduct surveillance, and reconnaissance. Unless otherwise

According to the Kenya police, police training goes beyond emphasizing the severity of the risks that officers face. This is by taking into account the likelihood of those risks materializing.”

Summarily, policing and other government security work has risks that we cannot casually dismiss, but officers are well aware of those risks and are well trained to face them. What the Government of Kenya is doing involves solving logistical challenges by providing better vehicles including procurement of APC’s.

In the area of communication, use modern radio comms besides other types of ICT based comms solutions are part of police reforms.

‘Tactical capability, equipment, and the overall operability of both newly acquired capability is part of the broader approach to policing challenges by the Government of Kenya.’

The challege is in their attitude and behaviours and not in their chest or muscles. They now could be doing what they do not know whilst having concealed what they know. In short, doing the opposite of what you say.

Murimi Gathagu as much as I agree with u @ some point I beg 2 differ not all Kenyan cops r corrupt. Calling the Kenya police a sham is a blanket accusation of which I strongly believe u being unfair 2 the officers who r actually out there doing their work diligently….

Dear Admin, I have read your article and I do agree with some sentiments but lest we also forget the Officers are human beings and hence there well being should be catered for. As of yesternight piece #ServeAndSuffer yes I applaud the work done by the journalist coz it also sheds some light on the actual challenges our galant officers go through for us to enjoy the freedom that we have. It’s also sad to see the sorry state of living despite their training. Worse of was the hardship allowance of a mere ksh. 600. Let the Government not only ensure our security is adamant and of utmost importance but also the welfare of our boys is given an utmost consideration. I stand to be corrected but those are my views and am sure are shared by many.

When bones are mentioned in a proverb, the old get uneasy. I wont dignify insults with a reply but merely point out the “quality” of the civil servant in question…none at all. PS: never wrestle a pig in the mud coz whilst he enjoys it, you’re dirtying & stooping to the lowest level in life.
