March 23, 2016: Kenya Police and other security agencies have heightened surveillance and security across the country following intelligence reports of al Shabaab militants escaping the onslaught against them in Somalia and are likely to sneak into the country.
Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet has urged Kenyans to exercise caution and vigilance, report ant suspicious activities. People in the North Eastern region of the country have been urged to report and incidences of unfamiliar people, looking dirty and starved as the militants are potentially very broke, dirty and hungry therefore very desperate and dangerous.
However Boinnet has assured that increased surveillance and police presence at the border area will ensure that the militants will not sneak into the country. Recently Kenya and Somalia entered into an agreement that will ensure joint border surveillance by both countries providing police/troop through respective counties and states.
Additionally, hoteliers and innkeepers have been asked to thoroughly scrutinize short-term leases and clients of their premises to avoid unknowingly harboring dangerous people.
Some of the intensified measures include thorough inspections of vehicles accessing public places, border checkpoints security as well as increased patrols in vulnerable public places and areas susceptible to attacks.
The warning comes after Kenyan troops, part of the African Union (AU) force in Somalia, killed 34 Al-Shabaab militants and captured a middle-level commander in two operations in Somalia over the weekend. Kenya has at least 4000 troops under the 22,000-strong AMISOM troops in Somalia battling to annihilate the Al Shabaab militants.
