Al Shabaab propaganda news is one of the tactics that the terrorist group is using to achieve their goal of spreading terror in East Africa and largely in Kenya and the home base Somalia.
Propaganda News is aimed to weaken the truth in a particular news item. Al Shabaab news propaganda on their communication networks always disputes the efforts of a country’s security system in combating terror.
Terror groups release their propaganda mainly to remain relevant by instilling fear in the public.
Timing of Al Shabaab news propaganda always suits the terror group’s agenda. It comes after a terror attack to instill fear in the public of the attackers’ imminent future attack. Their media channels have recently been destroyed by hackers in a cyber-attack. Their website and Radio channels also have been ruined (Off-air).
Terrorists Spreading Terror via Media
Terrorist groups have increasingly used social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to further their goals and spread their message.
- YouTube: Al Shabaab has released statements on YouTube dubbed (The Final Message of the Kampala Attack Worrier). This Video is a Statement issuing warning of their future terror attacks targeting Kenya, Uganda and Burundi.
- Facebook and Twitter: In the past, Twitter has been forced to shut down accounts affiliated to suspected members of the Al Shabaab terror group and also those of their sympathizers.
This is because the accounts were used by the militants to spread news propaganda that led to spread of terror among the public and cause confusion in the public consumption of information, the latter situation making the public doubt a country’s intelligence system.
Desperate Move
Al Shabaab terrorists have been trying desperately to use the online platform to push their agenda and to show other affiliate global terror network like the Al Qaeda which they that they are relevant within East Africa. This is only living in the illusion as the Islamist group is weakening at worrying trend, top commanders of the militant group have been killed by the Kenya Defence Force joint operations while other members are surrendering to the authorities.
Current the Islamist outfit is suffering from serious financial crisis. The hawalas which were their daily source of getting funds from sympathizers were closed by the Kenyan Government leaving the militant with financial constraints that hardly can sustain their terrorism activities.
The move has left the Islamist jihadists in more crisis, with no money , no food, members who are not able to raise funds for the outfit are being send away and others end up being killed, the move that has seen hundreds of Kenyan youths who had joined the terror group largely surrender to the authority when amnesty was granted.
