Armed insurgents in Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Somaliland have released the first video that introduces them and their agenda in the western part of the Horn of Africa nation. A group of around 30 men with arms and military uniform appeared in the recorded video that was shared with the media.
The group has called themselves Awaaleh Insurgents and said they are stationed in the eastern part of Borama. Over the last three months, there were rumors of armed insurgents in the Awdal region in the western part of Somaliland.
In the video, the rebels said that their main agenda was to fight the current Somaliland president as they accused him of injustice, nepotism, lack of power-sharing and less representation of Awdal and Selel regions in state’s top posts.
Last month, there were two separate incidents involving unknown militias attacking Borama Central Police Station and an attempted ambush to government vehicle near the district.
This new insurgency in Somalia is yet another evidence of the lawless nature and corruption in the country. Desperate youth have been either joining al Shabaab, ISIS or creating small rebel groups with the hope of addressing certain historical and systemic injustices. The new rebel groups if left unaddressed the group could morph into a larger group that would worsen the security in Somalia and especially in the western part of the country.
