Maiduguri, Nigeria- March 2, 2016: Nigeria’s military has reported dozens of scrawny looking Boko Haram members who surrendered to the Army begging for food and water.
At least 76 people among them women surrendered themselves to the soldiers at Gwoza which is about 100km southeast of Maiduguri.
The detainees have disclosed to the security official that more Boko Haram members and sympathizers are willing and ready to surrender but are afraid that the militants will kill them and their families.
Nigeria’s military as employed a war tactic that chokes the supply of basic needs to the militants. Food shortages could indicate that Nigeria’s military is succeeding in choking supply routes of the Islamic extremists who have taken their fight across Nigeria’s borders.
Nigeria’s military has put up a de-radicalization rehabilitation program that is expected to help the voluntary surrenders re-integrate back into the society.
The military has driven the insurgents from the towns and villages where they had set up an Islamic caliphate but Boko Haram has returned to hit-and-run tactics and suicide bombings both in Nigeria and her neighboring countries.
