Al-Shabaab Base with 160 Jihadists at Hosingow Destroyed in Kenyan Airstrike

airforce f5

Event

On 26th January 2016 at 1600hrs East African Time (EAT), 6 precision airstrikes conducted by 3 Kenya Army F-5 Tiger bombers completely decommissioned a terrorist forward base at Hosingow area in Juba region of Somalia.

Witnesses and Somali journalists reported the airstrike confirming devastation and complete decimation of the base but did not provide estimates of lost jihadists (enemy combatant deaths).

Military intelligence reports show that there was intelligence that an estimated 160 Al-Shabaab terrorists-fighters had made camp outside Hosingow with the intent of attacking Kenya Defense Forces forward operations base (KDF-FOB) in Juba region of Somalia.

Analysis

The military response to the threat on troops serving under AMISOM is part of a larger strategy that seeks to maximize  neutralizing of terrorist camps and making direct strikes against targets verified as the infrastructure for state-sponsored training and support complexes of the Al-Shabaab terror group in Somalia.

Kenya’s strategy is currently focusing on swift and sure operations to ensure intense ‘precision attrition and counter-force‘ ground and air operations against positions and camps belonging to the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Al-Shabaab Al-Mujahideen movement (HSM) in Gedo region of Somalia.

The initial OSINT assessments confirm the airstrikes were precise and did inflict a severe blow on the jihadists. Actual battle damage assessment will confirm if any of the estimated 160 fighters survived.
