December 14th 2015: At least 5 people killed and over 30 injured in inter-clan fighting in Baladweyne, Hiiraan. Fierce battle erupted between two clan militias after one attacked the other’s base in Howl-wadaag neighborhood.
Galkayo and Baladweyne have suffered a lot inter-clan war in the past few months with clan militias attacking each other causing deaths even with elders’ intervention for ceasefire.
A highly respected tribal chief Ugas Adirahman Ugas Khalif has condemned the senseless killings asking the respective village elders to solve the crisis amicably to avoid plunging the area back into the over 25 years of civil war era.
The AMISOM Djibouti contingent located in the area has tried intervening in the crises which has so far claimed the lives of 3 soldiers in the last two days.
The infighting by the clan militias not only affects the innocent civilians but also creates a breeding ground for the al Shabaab recruitment among the clan militia posing an even greater threat.
