EVENT SUMMARY

UN Security Council on Wednesday 25th May 2016 ended more than a decade of sanctions, arms embargo on Liberia.

UN Security Council announced the termination of an arms embargo against Liberia in renewed effort of rebuilding the nation after grappling with civil war between 1999 and 2003.

The 15-nation body through a unanimously adopted resolution voted to lift the arms embargo on the country and encouraged the Government to establish necessary framework to combat illicit arms and ammunition trafficking in the country.

UN Secretary General, Ban-Ki-moon in a statement issued by his spokesperson welcomed the council’s decision.

According to the statement, lifting arms ban on Liberia, signals significant progress made by the nation and the sub-region in maintaining stability.

The United States lifted its own economic sanctions on Liberia in November 2015.
