8th January 2016, Turkish troops on a training mission in northern Iraq successfully battled and repelled an attack by fighters of the Islamic State.

Turkish officials on Friday confirmed the Thursday clashes between their troops and Islamic State militants at the Bashiqa military base in Nineveh province.

During the encounter, at least 17 Islamic State militants were killed.

Around 150 were deployed at Bashiqa military base to help in training local Iraqi fighters in preparation to retaking the nearby town of Mosul which fell under the control of Islamic State.
