The US through its ambassador to the United Nations has said that it will withhold $225m aid to Pakistan for apparently playing both sides in the fight against terrorism. According to Nikki Haley, the ambassador, Pakistan at times works with the US to fight terrorists while at the same time they harbor terrorists that attack the US’ troops in Afghanistan.
Ms. Haley’s words were echoed by US President Trump via twitter where he accused the Asian country of deceit and lies. The Pakistani government has lashed at the decision ad accusations leveled against them calling them “completely incomprehensible” and “negated the decades of sacrifices made by the Pakistani nation.”
Relations between Pakistan and the US have soured in recent years over Islamabad’s alleged support for Haqqani network militants, who are linked to the Afghan Taliban. Moreover, the US claims that actionable intelligence claims that senior Afghan Taliban commanders live in Pakistan. In 2016, Taliban leader Mullah Mansour was killed by a US drone strike in Pakistan and in 2011, al Qaeda leader US troops killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.
