Mandera Governor, Ali Roba, has escaped an ambushed laid on his convoy by militant assailants. The attackers fired RPGs on the convoy transporting the governor, but none of them hit the governor’s vehicle thus sparing his life. Governor Roba is currently well and safe.
Field reports presently indicate that some vehicles were hit, and that some of the people travelling in the convoy are missing.
The convoy was attacked along Arabia-Omar Jilo road as the governor was heading towards Wargadud for an official function.
Kenyan security forces are currently pursuing the attackers as well as find the missing persons.
Al Shabaab has given indications that it was behind the attack. The attack comes a day after a drone strike killed senior Amniyaat operatives in Southwestern Somalia. Al Shabaab has conducted multiple terrorist attacks in Mandera with the attacks in Arabiya area killing over 25 Kenyans while the quarry attack in Koromay area killed over 35 quarry workers.
Mandera County also has a history of ethnic and clan factionalism which have at times caused clashes and intermittent periods of sustained conflicts. The two major Somali clans inhabiting the county, Garre and Degodia clans, have a history of turbulent relations and this has created an opportunity that al Shabaab has exploited to infiltrate the region.
