Kenya’s Security Officers Targeted in a Roadside Bomb in Wajir

Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) military convoy was targeted in a roadside bomb blast planted by Al-Shabaab assailants in Gerille, Wajir County.

A joint security team comprising of Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and their Kenya Police counterparts escaped unhurt after an improvised explosive device (IED) ripped through their convoy in Wajir County.

The Kenyan security officers were carrying out a joint security sweep after suspected Al-Shabaab militants were spotted in the area. The operation covered 21 kilometres within Kenya and 18 kilometres into Somalia.

A land cruiser that was leading a convoy of six vehicles, four belonging to the KDF and the others to the National Police Service; and two armoured personnel carriers (APC), ran over the roadside bomb and was completely destroyed in the fatal bomb explosion but there were no reported casualties on the Kenyan side.

In the aftermath of the attack, the joint security team fired several rounds mortar fires to defend themselves from possible attack and successfully thwarted the attack.
