Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) on 13/5/2017 night and morning hours of 14/5/2017 conducted airstrikes against Al-Qaeda affiliated jihadist in Gedo region of Somalia killing dozens of their fighters including two mid-level commanders.

KDF air raids bombarded two Al-Shabaab bases, Tulabarwaqo and Kabis within Gedo region killing several group’s operatives. Notably killed in the air sorties included two mid-level commanders identified as Abdullahi Saney from (MAREHAN rer Hassan) clan and Maalim Ibrahim.

KDF air sorties also saw the terrorists’ logistics bases destroyed together with their terrorism hardware and related weapons. Also two technical vehicles were destroyed.

The airstrikes were conducted after credible intelligence warned of terrorists encamping in villages near  KDF forward operating base (FOB) in anticipation to conduct attacks against the base.

Saney was a Jabha commander while Ibrahim was a Hisbah commander.

There is improved intelligence sharing between SNA and KDF in decimating the militant’s capability in Gedo region, a region which has severally served as launching pad for attacks by the militants.
