21st January 2016, Latest military reports indicate that Al-Shabaab commander identified as Maalim Janow who led the El Adde attack on a KDF base has been killed in KDF airforce strikes.
Chief of Defence Forces Gen Samson Mwathethe has confirmed the military reports saying the KDF airstrike launched after the attack has killed the El Adde attack ring leader.
CDF Mwathethe however refrained from mentioning the exact number of soldiers missing in action, injured or dead saying the rescue and recovery mission is ongoing as planned.
The General also downplayed claims that KDF contingent had prior intelligence shared on El Adde attack as claimed by a commander with Somali National Army adding.
General Mwathethe released Nairobi was first informed of the attack last Friday at about 6.30 am, almost two hours after it had happened as the terrorist had blast destroyed communication masts at the camp.
The rescue and recovery mission first batch encountered some resistance from the militants and it was tricky to fly to the area.
The soldiers had to re-strategize and use roads for more than ten hours from Damasa area, some 75 kilometers to the target area.
Kenyan soldiers are now in full control of the area and the rescue mission is expected to come to an end today (Thursday) the military chief added.
