Two people have been arrested in Mombasa as they attempted to travel to Somalia to join the al Shabaab. The two, a man named Anthony Mwangi Maina and a woman Malhassan Hassan Husein have a history of radicalization and involvement with criminal activities and have on the Anti-Terror Police watchlist.
Malhassan has been arrested several times with links to the al Shabaab and police intelligence reveal that she has attempted to travel to Somalia several times. Mwangi Maina aka Juleybib is one of the leaders of a Korogocho-based criminal group. This criminal group has been implicated in several attacks against security officials on patrol in various parts of Nairobi and its environs. He was reported by his parents as being a member of the al Shabaab and was planning to travel to Somalia.
The two were arrested in Mombasa following a tip-off from members of the public. All two have a history of terror-related activities and linkages with other terrorists and hard-core criminals, some of whom are currently serving lengthy sentences in Kenyan prisons.
The police have lauded the efforts of the public in volunteering information that has led to the arrests of al Shabaab terrorist living in Kenya and those planning to travel to Somalia.
